Publisher Square Enix is known for premium releases like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the latest The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. In our review, Rectify Gaming scored it a 8.5/10. “The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is a beautiful, charming, and frequently brilliant action RPG that earns its inspirations. If Team Asano and Claytechworks get to make a sequel with this engine and the rough edges get smoothed out, they’ll have something even more special.”
However, the firm has also approach live-service multiple times. For example, there was at one point a Final Fantasy VII battle royale – ‘The First Soldier’. But, it shuttered back in January 2021. Additionally, Square Enix in collaboration with Yoko Taro shipped NieR: Re[in]carnation. The game also shuttered its servers in spring 2024.
So now at its most recent annual shareholders meeting, Square Enix has confirmed that it plans to create a new system that unlocks games to be playable even after the servers are closed permanently. NieR: Re[in]carnation was referenced and likely other free-to-play titles are also on the horizon too.
“How we enable customers to enjoy a game after service has ended depends on the nature of a title. For instance, for the ‘NieR’ series, we share information through official live streams,” the publisher answered during the meeting. “For other titles, we preserve cutscenes on video streaming platforms. We will continue to create pathways befitting each title to ensure that players are able to enjoy them even after service has ended or the story has reached its end.”
On the topic of NieR, the firm recently celebrated 10 million sales for 2017’s NieR: Automata. Part of the milestone, Square Enix hinted that more for the series is coming hinting at a sequel when stating “Nier: Automata to be continued”. You can read the full report by heading here.
