While 2025 marks the 15th anniversary for NieR as a franchise, the last mainline entry came back in 2021 with NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139. In our review, Rectify Gaming scored the title a 9.5/10. “The story was well done and the different endings, were fantastic. NieR Replicant is a fantastic remaster and I highly recommend it to all action RPG fans!”
In the time since then, Square Enix has quietly pieced together more projects attached to the IP. From a 2022 announcement, an anime TV adaptation for Automata was greenlit. Additionally, the publisher crossed paths with ShiftUp on its recent release Stellar Blade which included an entire NieR: Automata DLC for the title alongside photo mode & other improvements to the base game.
Now recently in late February, Square Enix went out of its way for the series 15th anniversary. In a video celebrating the series, it was confirmed that NieR Automata sold over 10 million copies. The publisher then verified that “Nier: Automata to be continued” in a tease at the end of the video. You can watch the full video below:
The NieR series, while beloved, has a very porous release pattern. Despite the franchise being over a decade old, it hardly accounts for five entries in its repertoire. Even more, one game is tied to mobile devices without a proper introduction to conventional consoles or PC. NieR Reincarnation is canonically included in the universe, but was only shipped for iOS & Android back in 2021.
Furthermore, creative mind Yoko Taro has also moved onto other efforts outside of NieR too. In spring 2021, it was reported that the NieR storyteller would be a creative director for a new IP at Square Enix. You can read the full report by heading here.
Are you excited NieR is officially receiving a new release somewhat soon?
