After hearing about Twitch beginning to sell games and in-game items through its site with the help of Amazon, we heard brief whisperings of “Twitch Crates”, an accompanying service that would launch in tandem with and be part of Twitch’s storefront-like functionality. On their official blog today, Twitch detailed Twitch Crates including how pricing association will work with the storefront functionality.
Twitch Crates, which will be integrated into the site when the storefront functionality opens to the public, are bonus package-like content that are earned whenever a viewer or player spends over $4.99 USD on a game or in-game item. The Crate can contain things like chat badges and emotes to in-game items, if a crate is received alongside a game with in-game items.
The biggest detail about Twitch Crates is two-fold. First, Twitch Crates can stack once you’ve bought them, meaning they don’t have to be opened immediately once received. And second, sort of in the same vein, is that even if a game or in-game item costs multiples of $4.99, like if a game costs $9.99, it will only come with one Twitch Crate.
Twitch also addresses the possibility of duplicates, saying they will show as only a single item in the Twitch Inventory, and players will be unable to trade any duplicates at the time of launch. If we learn more prior to the public rollout of Twitch-based game buying and Twitch Crates, we’ll keep you updated. Until then, be sure to stay tuned to Rectify Gaming for the latest.
