Rewinding back to E3 2019 before COVID-19 took over our lives, Bethesda & Tango Gameworks announced upcoming action-thriller, GhostWire: Tokyo. After two installments of The Evil Within, the Bethesda-owned developer is going in a new direction to offer the new first-person experience. One of the hallmarks of the reveal is how the game was presented by Ikumi Nakamura as her presence left a lasting impact on the industry once again.
However, while Nakamura previously stood as the Creative Director at Tango Gameworks during the initial reveal, she decided to retire from working at the Japanese studio after nine years with the firm. But, Nakamura did not disclose her ambitions following the decision. She did mention her interest in creating a sequel to Capcom’s Ōkami shortly after, but no progress on the desire has materialized as of writing.
In a new Remnant Tour from YouTuber Cutscenes, Nakamura explores abandoned buildings and explains her pursuit to open a new indie game studio. She adds that the team is already onto working on a new IP that has yet to be announced. You can watch the segment of the video below:
When questioned about her experience when leaving Tango Gameworks, Nakamura had this to say: “I made a tweet saying that I had quit. On that same day, I had received around 2000 messages on LinkedIn,” Nakamura shares in the video. “There were messages of encouragement, support, and Job offers as well. Many people were also offering me to come and visit their Studios.
“It was a chance for me to travel and learn what made a good working environment. I decided to use that experience to open my own Small Studio and build a new IP.” Elsewhere in the video, Nakamura also commented lightly on GhostWire: Tokyo. For one, she disclosed that development for the game initially began all the way back in 2015 and is now bearing its fruits as it approaches closer to release.
Currently, there is still no confirmed release date for GhostWire: Tokyo. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment might have leaked the release window prematurely. In that, the firm unveiled an October 2021 timeframe for the game earlier in January at CES. You can read the full report by heading here.
