While the PlayStation 5’s success shows to continue well into 2021, the system is at a fault with limited units available for purchase. So much so that even corporate Sony acknowledges this problem to be present well into 2022 for sure. “I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year,” Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki stated.

Despite the upset in stock for the latest PlayStation system, Sony is currently pursuing its next PlayStation VR headset developed to exclusively support the PlayStation 5. However, it surely is not to release in 2021, Sony clarified initially. And during the wait, Sony Interactive Entertainment did spare a glimpse at the controller for the new VR peripheral, but not the device itself after.

In a new report from UploadVR, sources familiar with the project told the outlet that the new virtual reality headset is to be primed for the next-generation of VR Gaming. While the Oculus Quest 2 already presented itself to be that way with 50 percent pixel count per eye and the extended battery life with no hardwire connection, the next PlayStation VR headset is to push that boundary.

Firstly, the new headset is to offer a 4K resolution output which swiftly overtakes what’s provided on PlayStation VR currently. The exact resolution is reported to be 2000×2040 per eye which is slightly more than the latest iteration from Oculus. Additionally, haptic feedback is also said to be implemented for the headset as well – not just the controllers.

In extension to current virtual reality devices, the new PlayStation VR headset is to also include cameras to track the position of the controllers. While already executed with other prominent peripherals, UploadVR iterates that the feature will better sync the position of the player unlike the current hardware out now.

Elsewhere in the talks of upcoming virtual reality systems, Oculus CTO commented its aim to achieve a controller-free headset. Alike with the built-in cameras for the controllers on the new PlayStation VR SKU, the next-generation of Oculus headsets are to approximately project hand tracking.
