For the sakes of Doom Eternal which shipped just over a year ago now, developer id Software emphasizes on the conclusion of the sequel with the previously released add-on, The Ancient Gods. Divided into two parts, the story progresses from the base storyline as the Doom Slayer faces his largest battle yet with new settings and enemies ahead.

“The Ancient Gods is an unapologetic and brutal conclusion to an epic game,” writes our critic David Rodriguez on his review for the DLC. He adds, “Rip and tear into this expansion and see end for yourselves.” More recently, id Software & Bethesda unveiled a definitive next-generation update for Doom Eternal with 120Hz support and raytracing included that dropped earlier this week.

But, the developer also comes to bear some news. Unfortunately, the promised Invasion Mode is no longer. However, that has now manifested into more support for Battlemode – Doom Eternal’s online component – and a newly paved mode, Horde Mode.

“As many are aware, we intended to release a free Invasion Mode update for the game. However, the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development or this addition. Over this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels. With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player Horde Mode.”

Executive producer Marty Stratton continues, “We’re confident this Horde Mode will offer you more of the diversity and challenge you’re looking for in the game. In addition, the team continues to work on a refresh of BATTLEMODE that includes a more competitive, rank-based structure, a number of gameplay and balance updates, and another new map. We expect to share more information at QuakeCon in August.”

Prior to E3, Bethesda officially paved way for QuakeCon to take place in August. However, the show will be held in a digital format. Now with Doom Eternal online updates and Horde Mode now scheduled for the show next month, there is an easier understanding of the structure for the showcase to say the least.

Previously, id Software while confident on the conclusion of the Doom Slayer’s story for Doom Eternal did comment on the possibilities of a female Doom Slayer. Although still uncertain the future for the series, Game Director Hugo Martin did tell to contemplate the idea. You can read the full report by heading here.
