Nintendo’s Wii-U will have its production cut short this year, according to Japanese newspaper Nikkei. Most commentators speculate that the Wii-U’s end will likely coincide with the release of the company’s new hardware, codenamed Nintendo NX.
Launching in 2012, the Wii-U struggled to bring in sales, despite its launch a year before the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. With subpar graphics, as well as lacking online capability, the Wii-U’s mobile tablet feature simply couldn’t make up the ground that the console needed. While the previous generation Wii sold more than 100 million units worldwide from 2006-2013, Nintendo has reported that the company has only sold 12.6 million Wii-U’s since 2012, obviously a drastically disappointing number.
It is worth noting that, while the company will stop producing the console by the end of the year, there is no official word on whether retailers will continue to sell the Wii-U new afterward. Used consoles will, of course, be available for a while after.
