As many are still aware since November of last year, it is still extremely difficult to acquire a now-current-generation console. While it was next-generation at launch, the Xbox Series X|S & PlayStation 5 adopted the normalized title as scarcity for hardware remained in brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers across the globe. And from AMD CEO Lisa Su, the wait could be until June 2021 at the earliest.

Even in a separate statement from Microsoft, head of Investor Relations Mike Spencer also told a similar story at the start of the year. However, PlayStation 5 production is said to be affected until next year at the earliest, Sony CFO Horoki Totoki. “I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,” he told then.

According to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, the wait could be prolonged even further. Speaking during the company’s Q2 earnings call, the wait could even go beyond next year as he tells “one to two years” is more likely for the wait from currently specifically for semiconductors.

While I expect the shortages to bottom out in the second half, it will take another one to two years before the industry is able to completely catch up with demand.IDM 2.0, which combines our internal manufacturing capacity with the use of third-party foundries, best positions us to weather these challenges and work with our ecosystem partners to build a more resilient supply chain.

With major fab construction projects underway in Oregon, Arizona, Ireland and Israel, we are investing for the future, but we are also taking action today to find innovative ways to help mitigate industry constraints.

Previously, Sony acknowledged that the largest concern is for semiconductors as the shortage for said silicon leaves a delay in production for PlayStation 5. Elsewhere, the concern becomes even greater when global markets fall victim to the issue. In that, United States President Joe Biden announced to launch an investigation to increase production for the components.

Despite the setback, both new-generation systems are performing extremely well. From Microsoft, the Xbox Series consoles are the most successful units in history for Microsoft’s video game division. “The Xbox Series S and X are our fastest-selling consoles ever, with more consoles sold live to date than any previous generation,” Sayta Nadella, Microsoft CEO.

Similarly, PlayStation 5 is also proving to be a juggernaut seller for Sony as well. According to a press release from Sony Interactive Entertainment, the PlayStation 5 has now exceeded 10 million units sold since its release last fall. You can read the full report by heading here.
