Since the game’s inception back in 2017, many continue to turn to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as the most bare bones battle royale in comparison to the bunch. Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone are liked in their own respects, but there is a charm that the game from developer Krafton which no other title has yet to greatly achieve. While that attribute remains still, the game surely is a lot different than it was when getting into public hands.

Just last month, Season 11 welcomed map Taego with a new mechanic to the game, comeback. Players can now find themselves dropping back into the game after dying once already. Unique to the new locale, there is also the ability to self-revive which was not introduced to the game until this most recent title update. But, the future of the series is going in an interesting direction to say the least.

According to a report from PC Gamer, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is being renamed. While already applying the change on public banners already, the developer in a statement to the outlet confirms the decision of the title’s new name – PUBG: Battlegrounds.

Krafton is actively expanding the PUBG brand through a variety of new experiences set in its universe. Rebranding PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds to PUBG: Battlegrounds is the first step in us realizing this vision. Additional titles in the franchise will carry the PUBG name, as you see with our upcoming game, PUBG: New State.

While the name has officially changed for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in the west, the decision is not new for the series. Previously, the battle royale made the same decision when releasing the game in India. However, it was an issue with legality of the original title and was relabeled ‘Battlegrounds Mobile’ over in the western hemisphere.

The developer in the statement elaborates that the decision was to better prepare the future of the franchise as new release emerge within the same universe. In that, the upcoming new release that expands the series’ stance on mobile, PUBG: New State, is part of that initiative. The game is still projected to arrive sometime later on in 2021.

Additionally, The Callisto Protocol is another example of the PUBG universe expansion. While little has been shared on the project since its reveal last December, former Dead Space creator Glen Schofield is helming the project. You can read the full report by heading here.
