For the initial western announcement for Phantasy Star Online 2, the largest surprise came to be that Sega is not arriving to the region with a PlayStation version in mind, but an Xbox version instead. Of course, PC will also be prompted at arrival as well, however, that will be through the Microsoft-orchestrated platform, Windows 10 Store. But, it was in due time until more storefronts welcomed to game its libraries.

Shortly after, Steam was faced with its own version of Phantasy Star Online 2. And not too long after that, Epic Games Store also welcomed the game to its respected store as well. In hindsight, it was in preparation to reach as far as possible for the release of Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. The venture was confirmed to be shipping globally and Sega was adamant to capitalize on all routes available.

Now according to the most recent Sega Sammy financial report, Sega records more than 9 million users actively playing Phantasy Star Online 2 for the month of June – a milestone which has yet to be broken for the series until now.

Additionally, Sega also discloses that the number of sales generated from Phantasy Star Online 2 since launch has now exceeded more than ¥100 billion in gross revenue. While it is presumed that a large majority of earnings was earned through the 6.5 million users that play over in Japan, overseas can certainly be accounted for with more than 2.5 million is accounted for as well elsewhere.

Similar to how Phantasy Star Online 2 shipped with a global launch already with glowing results, Sega prepares to do the same with Atlus-developed titles as well moving forward. The decision was showed to be a result for impressive numbers dialed in from the worldwide release for RGG Studio’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon. You can read the full report by heading here.
