During the game’s initial release, many were uncertain how to receive Death Stranding fully. In that, the press would give the title full praise for the direction Hideo Kojima’s first independent release was delivered while players found the game to be not what they anticipated. Ultimately, it appeared that game might overshot expectations especially when it was the first PlayStation 4 exclusive title in years to not make its way to the top 10 selling releases when it launched at the time.
However, Kojima later went on to address that Death Stranding’s performance resulted to be successful for more releases. In a more recent statement from Kojima Productions, the team reiterates that performance has further grown especially with the PC launch following a year later. As for the next project Kojima Productions is pursuing next, Kojima told GameSpot in 2019 that a follow-up might be in the playbook if everything goes swimmingly.
In a recent statement from Norman Reedus who starred in Death Stranding, the Walking Dead actor seemed to have slipped on details regarding a second Death Stranding game. Speaking with Adorocinema, he told the Brazil-based outlet that he’s certain a second in on the way. “I think we’re doing a second Death Stranding. [The game] is in negotiations now. So… Yay,” Reedus’ statement reads when pushed through an online translator.
Reiterating on Kojima’s previous comment to GameSpot, he did reference that the first game would not directly be followed by a sequel. Instead, he did mention a ‘Death Stranding 1.5’ would likely be what comes after. And that appears to be with the September release for Death Stranding: Director’s Cut next month. But following, we might see a second entry if what Reedus said comes to fruition in the coming months.
While Death Stranding was a creative endeavor pushed by Hideo Kojima, it seems that the Director’s Cut is more of a project handled by Sony Interactive Entertainment – at least for the titling that is. When venting to his followers on Twitter, Kojima himself agreed that the choice for the title is not what reflects the meaning in reality. You can read the full report by heading here.
