It is hard to argue in favor of the decisions Sony & PlayStation has made in the past month. At the start of July, it was revealed that further production for PlayStation physical titles will cease by January 2028. Just the month before, sales metrics revealed that despite growing digital sales, more than 70 percent of new consoles purchased still came with a disc drive.

While the complaints are loud, it does not appear Sony is making changes going into the new console cycle. Leaks point to a new system without a disc reader yet still charging roughly $1,000 at retail. To make matters worst, the PlayStation Network went down this weekend and resulted in millions unable to access their digital purchases at a global scale; displaying the irony in the entire situation.

Now looking ahead to what will be digital-only PlayStation once again reveals that physical titles still matter. According to X user @CRy3no, it was revealed that legacy purchases are not even guaranteed either. The conversation of license ownership has been its own discussion for years, but now has come to fruition with the user discovering that games bought on PlayStation 3 are nonaccessible due to inactivity of the account.

Later in the thread, the X user also went ahead recording that the situation is genuine and not an internet hoax. Upon attempting to launch Crash Bandicoot: Warped, a disclaimer displayed reads “This content has a time limit,” and locks the ability to launch the game. So despite purchasing in 2010, the access to the license was only available to the account which has since been deactivated. This is part of the clause in Section 21.2 that was reported on earlier this month.

The conversation continues to end on the importance of physical ownership. Following the last major scale PlayStation Network outage in winter 2025, Rectify Gaming signified that despite an oppressive digital future, the option remains the most valuable over the convenient alternative.
