While Sony Interactive Entertainment has been adamant to delivering its experiences to PlayStation uniquely for more than two decades, the platform has shifted to a more open approach for users on PC as well. In 2022 alone, fans will be able to play God of War alongside Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End on the platform.

However, President & CEO Jim Ryan is eager to bring its titles to more players [platforms]. “I’d like to see a world where the games that we make at PlayStation can be enjoyed by many, many tens of millions of people.” Now with the recent purchase of Bungie, that possibility is certainly available for the PlayStation company.

In a follow-up interview, Ryan explained the intentions of the acquisition was to establish a multiplatform team in behalf of PlayStation and extend its reach with live service. Adding on to that narrative, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki elaborated on the firm’s intentions in the most recent earnings call transcribed by The Verge; revealing 10 release by 2026 at the earliest.

The strategic significance of this acquisition lies not only in obtaining the highly successful Destiny franchise, as well as major new IP Bungie is currently developing, but also incorporating into the Sony group the expertise and technologies Bungie has developed in the live game services space. Through close collaboration between Bungie and PlayStation Studios we aim to launch more than 10 live service games by the fiscal year ending March 2026.

Although it is not definite how the firm will tackle this ambition, Bungie will play a large role in this nonetheless. To solidify this, it was revealed in the latest financial report from corporate Sony that $1.2 billion of the $3.7 billion acquisition was used to maintain the staffing at Bungie upon following through with the purchase.

Moving forward, more sales are to be made by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Speaking with gamesiductry.biz, Ryan added that there is still more noise to be made from the PlayStation firm as it will not be the last you hear from it in terms of buying more established talent.
