Over the past couple of years, developer PlatinumGames has faced a culture change in how the game studio approaches its projects. While the team still has partnered titles with Nintendo like Bayonetta 3 & Square Enix with Babylon’s Fall, the developer is pursuing self-publishing as well. We witnessed this catalyzed with The Wonderful 101: Remastered and the announcement of Project G.G. previously.

During its initial announcement back in 2020, the team also emphasized on creating its own proprietary engine as well. “We’ve used our own in-house engine, specialized for action game development, since PlatinumGames was founded. But modern games demand a whole new level of quality, a greater variety and number of objects on-screen, and a richer amount of expressive visual power, “Wataru Ohmori told then. “Our new engine will help us make bigger, more expressive games than ever before, and with greater ease.”

In a recent interview with Famitsu, PlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba explains that the firm is looking to experiment with more trends within the industry and to potentially enter the live service market as well, Video Game Chronicles transcribes. He explains that its games are considered “one-off”, however, is desiring to develop projects that “can be enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time.”

While grasping the idea of the Japanese developer delving into the genre might come as a surprise, it would not be its first property that tackled the same market. As mentioned previously, it is working on Babylon’s Fall which is being helmed by its division based in Tokyo, Japan. But, there is more context to this pursuit.

Previously, it was reported that the team obtained a stake investment from Tencent. It is possible that the involvement of the Chinese entertainment conglomerate could be swaying PlatinumGames to invest into the growing market for ongoing properties rather than the traditional releases its known for.
