Marooners is a family friendly game, made by M2H Game Studio, who have made many multiplayer games. Marooners is an early access Steam game for $15.
Note: Currently Marooners is an early access game, which is also in a beta. Everything that I talk about from gameplay, to audio, can change.
Multiplayer:
As I have said before, Marooners is a multiplayer party game marketed to the family friendly genre. So you will be playing with a lot of kids, and at first that is a problem. You see, while I was playing Marooners, I faced against a lot of kids. I can tell this because some players were either doing their own thing or not playing at all. This left to almost no competition at all. I almost won all the games I played. Marooners so far, is a 6-player multiplayer game, where you can play online, locally, or just with your friends. If you are not a kid, who wants to play competitively, I would not buy this game unless you have friends to play it with you. Marooners does not have much for a fan base. It feels like no one plays and it takes multiple tries to find a game with at least 1 other person. I have never even been in a game with 6 other people. I cant really complain about this because it is a beta after all, but still, I felt like my time was being wasted. You can choose a variety of characters to play as, such as a caveman, to a deep-sea diver. You can also pick different colors to customize your character.
Gameplay:
Marooners is a party game, kind of like Mario party but more fast paced. The objective of the game is to get the most coins. You can do this by either collecting, coins, gems, or diamonds. And attacking another player to steal some of their coins. There are a total of 8 mini-games so far. In every game there are 5 mini-games which alternate between about every 10 seconds each. You continue to play the same mini-games until either all the other players die, or until all the coins have been collected. The mini-games are rather simplistic but unique. In one, you try to climb as high as you can from inside a volcano.
Stay on a piece of ice, protecting yourself from winds, breaking ice, and other players. And there is one just about collecting the most coins you can get.
Power ups are also another element of gameplay. These hide in “mystery boxes”, and can be a magnet (to attract the coins), or just a speed boost. Watch out though, sometimes you can get a bomb, which you can throw to other players, or just accidentally kill yourself. This is especially true in a mini-game, in where you try to dig to the bottom of a cave, where you can be trapped with a bomb.
When you die, you will respawn back as a ghost, who can attack other players, but that’s about it. If one person survives a mini-game then they can get a trophy, filled with coins to give them a boost. Graphic wise, for a small game like this, Marooners looks actually good. It looks cartoonish at times, but the game looks very clean and stylish. The audio is very normal. You don’t hate it, nor love it. Its basic like a high school band, but fits in with the game. There are a lot of bugs to deal with. Sometimes I glitch through a rock, or the camera goes somewhere else. It happens every few games but its still annoying when you die because the camera decided to leave and explore the surrounding area.
Now, my biggest problem with the game is that it does not have a lot of content, at least for $15. After a couple games it gets repetitive, after seeing all the mini-games, and playing with all the characters, it’s just not enough. Maybe for a child, Marooners is a fun game to play, but it’s not worth the $15.[rwp-review id=”0″]
