While the conversation of acquisitions is pointed directly at Microsoft over the past year, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to approach this in the more lateral approach. In that, the PlayStation firm has acquired quite a number of teams in recent months. The most surprising happened to be the deal for Bungie which officially finalized this past summer.
Additionally, the same can also be said for other developers as well at a smaller scale. In that, Ballistic Moon which was previously reported to be working on an exclusive project was also recorded to being another purchase for Sony Interactive Entertainment. Not to mention the announcement for Firewalk Studios just less than a month ago as well.
However, some current teams are to be no longer as well. In a surprise discovery on Twitter, Concrete Genie developer PixelOpus announced that it is reaching its last chapter of being a PlayStation Studios team with its demise coming very soon.
Elsewhere, Sony also offered a statement to IGN on the matter: “PlayStation Studios regularly evaluates its portfolio and the status of studio projects to ensure they meet the organization’s short and long-term strategic objectives. As part of a recent review process, it has been decided that PixelOpus will close on June 2.” Noted, the team was previously working on a new title utilizing Unreal Engine 5, a job posting from 2021 stated.
Noted, this is not the first surprise pull of the plug for a talented team at PlayStation in recent years. The same can also be documented for Japan Studio: the team was most recognized for its work releasing classic platform staples including PaRappa the Rapper, Ape Escape and The Legend of Dragoon.
