A couple of years ago, video game films were a moment that fans continually winced at when learning their most loved characters or series are being adapted to the big screen. But with films like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & the Super Mario Bros. Movie, this connotation has been entirely wiped as fans now anticipate the next film underway. For Sega, it is busy already with the aforementioned blue blur mascot.
Next December, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is said to hit theaters. Not only that, but there is also a Paramount+ Knuckles television series that is also underway. Recently, director Jeff Fowler revealed filming has begun with him behind the camera for the pilot episode. Additionally, reports suggest Tails could be receiving a spin-off film as well sometime in the future too.
According to a recent translated Q&A transcript from Sega Sammy, the holdings firm reveals that its plans for more film adaptations is being considered following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog. CEO Haruki Satomi and CFO Koichi Fukazawa express further interest to bring more IPs to the silver screen.
If we can match the timing of game launches to the release of movies, it would be extremely effective from a marketing perspective and there are also significant benefits, such as increasing awareness of our IP and increasing the number of touch points for customers, as we achieved with the Sonic movie. We would like to take on challenges outside of the Sonic IP should the opportunity arise.
So far, Sega has remained busy with new productions already in the works. In one report from Variety, it was revealed Wild Sheep & 1212 is already piecing together a film version for RGG Studios’ Yakuza. In a separate report from IGN, it was also shared that Atlus is being considered for its properties to face film or even TV series also.
From the same transcript, Sega reveals it’s possibly considering a price increase for its games. While more publishers already made the jump, Sega could also be added to that list in the near future for $70. You can read the full report by heading here.
