The Coalition Narrative Director For Gears Shifts To New Role For God Of War

In terms of what developer The Coalition has been occupied with over the past few years, there is not much to offer in regards to recent releases. The most notable is the firm’s demonstration ‘The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience’ which showcased the capabilities of the new game-building suite. And it speaks for itself as much of the founding staff for the studio originated from Epic Games roughly a decade ago.

However, the team is most notable for its effort on the Gears of War IP at Xbox. But in recent time, there has been no word on what the team was working on exactly. Previously, it was revealed that the firm shelved two internal projects which surrounded a new IP. But it was certain focus would shift entirely to the next installment of Gears. Even a job listing later indicated the team already commenced work on the new entry.

Recently, it was disclosed via a post on X that one leader at The Coalition is moving on from the studio. In that, narrative director Bonnie Jean Mah shares her departure from the Xbox Game Studios team to a new role at Santa Monica Studios’ God of War division.

Originally, Mah was part of the founding for The Coalition back in 2014 when joining the developer still labeled ‘Black Tusk Studios’ at the time. She stood as a narrative producer on Gears of War 4 before leaving for Relic Entertainment as a narrative lead on Age of Empires 4. She then returned to The Coalition for her role as narrative director and remained until now working on Gears 5 & Gears Tactics.

Similarly, we’ve seen staffing leave for PlayStation Studios developers. The most notable is Drew Murray when initially holding a leading role at The Initiative. Murray prior to that was a notable developer at Insomniac Games, but returned to the team in 2021. You can read the full report by heading here.
