Whether you have a mind to hit up the casinos at some point, are looking to become a tournament player, or simply have a friendly game set up with some pals and you don’t want to embarrass yourself, poker is a game that you can improve at. You can get better if you try. It’s not all about luck, it’s about being able to read the cards in your hand, and the other players, so that you can get a better idea of your chances of winning. As such, here, we’re going to look at some of the ways that you can improve your poker game, without the risk of losing any money along the way.

Know the different kinds of game

Before you sit down at any table, you want to understand the rules that you’re playing by, as well. There’s no easier way to get confused than to sit down to a game with a rule you don’t get. Texas Hold ‘Em is the most popular and widely used variation these days, but there are different types of poker that you can learn, including Omaha Hi-Lo and Seven Card Stud. Of course, your best bet is not to sit at a table playing a game you don’t understand, but learning different poker games can be a lot of fun, too.

Know your hands

Before you start putting any chips down, you should have a good idea of the different hands, as well as which hands beat which. Pairs beating high cards, two pairs beating one pair, three-of-a-kind beating that, etc. Not only does it help you recognize when you have an advantage that might be worth pushing, but you are also going to avoid embarrassing yourself by thinking that you have won when someone has a better hand than you. Not only is it a social faux pas, but that kind of mistake lets other players know you’re a novice. Once poker players smell blood, they will play more aggressively against you.

Know your starting hands

Not only should you recognize which hands you have, when you have them, but you want to be able to better recognize which hands you are close to if you’re close to any at all. Sometimes, a couple of high cards in your starting hand might not offer you an immediate path to victory, but it can offer a higher pair than other players without a premade hand, as well. Learning the different poker hand probabilities can help you better gauge your chances based on what’s in your hand, giving you a better idea of when to put the chips down.

Practice makes perfect

Of course, all of the knowledge above needs to be able to work in reality, not just theoretically. The best way to test it all is to simply play some poker. There are free games like Christmas poker that allow you to practice in a safe environment against Ai, where there’s no risk of losing money or feeling bad about other players getting a hand up on you. You can see how knowing the hands and playing based on an understanding of probability can pay off for you.

Avoid acting on a whim

One of the biggest mistakes that new poker players will fall into is letting momentary frustration or confusion make their decisions for them. You have time to make decisions, so don’t make them without having a reason. If your logic is faulty, it’s better to take the time to act on faulty logic than to simply let luck take the wheel. If you’re bluffing, betting, or folding, always have a reason behind what you do, or else other players will be able to tell that you’re a player that might be weak to pressure.

Get to recognize patterns of behavior

Of course, poker is not just a game about your own hand, but about the hands of your opponents, as well. As such, a big part of poker is not only knowing when you push your luck but strategizing based on interpersonal interaction. This includes being able to read patterns of behavior that players indulge in. Reading other players’ tells is one of the most popular advanced strategies, and far from easy to master, but something worth practicing, all the same.

A lot of the skills that go into poker are innate, but many of them are senses that can be sharpened, and understanding of probability that you can learn with a little studying along the way.
