While Netflix is certainly regarded for its prolific standing in the new age of content streaming, the firm is continuously tackling video games. Of course, transmedia for pre-existing IPs has remained a staple for the platform these past few years. Additionally, it is also stepping into game development itself. Already, it is confirmed a Rebel Moon game is on the way with developer Super Evil Megacorp.

Not only that, but more of its original releases are being eyed for adaptations as well. One report references Squid Games, Wednesday, and Black Mirror just to list a few. Netflix is also partnering with major developers as well to feature namesake titles on its gaming platform. In that, the most recent happens to be Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition which arrived late 2023.

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, there are internal discussions at Netflix with ads being considered for Netflix Games. And not to jump the gun – this is only being pitched for the ‘Standard with ads’ $6.99 tier of Netflix. There was no mention of Netflix incorporating advertisements for higher payment options.

What’s more, it is surprising that Netflix has not considered this sooner. While subscription is its key source of revenue, injecting ads to those willing to pay the introductory tier only makes sense. And to gross that from Netflix Games as well would certainly be in its favor knowing the projects that are coming to the platform later on.

Recently, it was reported that Netflix’s video game operation is growing immensely. Partly, the number of titles in development solely for Netflix Games is a large quantity. In total, over 90 titles are said to be in the pipeline already according to Netflix Games vice president Mike Verdu. You can read the full report by heading here.
