Space Invaders Film Shows New Life At New Line Cinema Bagging The Out-Laws Writers

The Atari 2600 series Space Invaders has remained one of the hallmark entries that paved the way for the industry when it released more than three decades ago. Since then, there has been other stabs at the IP. In 2021, Square Enix announced that it would be developing a new mobile game. But in the vein of Pokémon Go, it would be an interactive AR experience of the Taito title.

The game later arrived in the form of Space Invaders: World Defense’. Additionally, the series also found new life on Apple Arcade. Upon the announcement of a platform exclusive Katamari Damacy title, ‘Space Invaders Infinity Gene Evolve’ was another showcased title for the platform to hit the store this year. But, there were also attempts to make a Space Invaders movie as well dating back to 2019.

Despite little momentum, it has remained on the backburner at New Line Cinema for roughly half a decade. According to Deadline, an update has be revealed for the Space Invaders project. Both writers Ben Zazove & Evan Turner (The Out-Laws) are to now pen the script. Originally, Mortal Kombat (2021) writer Greg Russo was attached to write. Zazove is noted for his work writing Sherlock Gnomes whilst Turner is credited for penning Dear David.

Weed Road Pictures remains involved in production with Akiva Goldsman (I, Robot, I Am Legend) set to produce. It is also reported that Joby Harold (Edge of Tomorrow, Novocaine) and Tory Tunnell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Spinning Out) are also producers for Space Invaders on behalf of Safehouse Pictures; both were attached in the initial reporting.

As for other New Line Cinema video game adaptations, it is already nearing the completion of Mortal Kombat II. Trailers for the film have already been released online showcasing Karl Urban (Dredd, The Boys) as Johnny Cage. It is confirmed to release in October 2025.
