Sandfall Interactive Confirms Franchise Plans For Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, “This Is Not The End”

The reach seen from Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is very hard to not notice since its release earlier this spring. Since arriving on consoles, PC, as well as Xbox Game Pass, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has proven to be a success from the small French developer shipping roughly 3.3 million units since this May. There is already a plan in motion for a live-action film as well witnessing the influence of the universe.

At the same time, it is evident that the game studio behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are major fans of JRPGs which takes several inspirations for its title. Series like Final Fantasy, the Tales series, Lost Odyssey, and Persona are among the list. Additionally, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 went on to outsell some of those franchises from major publishers at release in lifetime sales on Steam.

Now with the iron still fairly hot roughly half a year later, Sandfall Interactive speaks on follow-ups for the IP. In an interview with MrMattyPlays, director Guillaume Broche tells that Expedition 33 is just one entry in the ‘Clair Obscur’ franchise and is not the bookend of the greater story. “Clair Obscur is the franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise. Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise.” Broche elsewhere in the interview elaborated on writing the sequel for Expedition 33 and mentions his strategy is to not reflect too much on the first game to really drawn out an impactful sequel.

“It’s a tough feeling to ignore [the first game]. For me, like, we have to find this place of sincerity and authenticity again and just do what we love and ignoring what made Expedition 33 successful in a way. […] Expedition 33 is such like a fusion of everything I love in games, in storytelling, in art and everything. That- it’s tough to start from scratch again.”
