gta 6

Anyone who even has a glancing interest in the gaming industry knows that this year will (hopefully) be the year that we finally get to see the new GTA, after a monumental 13-year wait. It’s hard to think of any other game in history that is still able to galvanize such a fervent fanbase, despite the previous title being released over a decade ago.

Of course, we’re not just talking about any game here. We’re talking about a game that, for all intents and purposes, is a defining moment in pop culture, especially in early 21st-century culture.  With this standing in the market, will anticipation automatically make it a success?

Can It Repeat Multi-Decade Success?

The way GTA adapted to the rise of online gaming in the 2010s meant that GTA V was the most profitable game of the 2010s, and with such a bedrock of success across multiple generations of games, it’s easy to see why the anticipation is so high for this landmark title.

Grand Theft Auto introduced a first for many: free-roam titles, radio stations, innovative story mode ideas, humor, and the integration of casino games have made the game a global phenomenon. However, in the 25 years since GTA 3 first revolutionized Rockstar’s fortunes, we have seen many of the firsts it ushered in becoming commonplace in gaming.

Online casino gaming is now an enormous multi-billion-dollar market in its own right, with traditional games like craps adapting to the demands and dynamics of the global gambling market.

Those who play table games like craps online understand just how successful a standalone industry gambling has become. It has meant that the innovations we see in GTA 6 will have to go bigger and bolder than any of the titles that have come before. Casinos may play a part, as may classic games like craps, but there needs to be a much broader scope for innovation. With anticipation higher than it has ever been, is it destined to disappoint, or is it simply too big to fail?

Controlling The Hysteria

When the first GTA 6 trailer came out at the end of 2023, the gaming world went into overdrive. It didn’t help that the trailer was leaked before its grand release, and that hackers have consistently targeted and gained access to GTA 6 inside scoops on multiple occasions

For any other game, getting hacked every couple of months would be a red flag. However, for GTA 6, it feels like just par for the course. This is down to the scale of expectations and the global interest it generates.

Pre-orders of the game have been subject to considerable internet rumours and news over the last few months, which again highlights just how gargantuan this game is. What other game generates a tsunami of influencers and legacy media sites to sit up and comment on every incremental developmental move?

In the space that has emerged between GTA V and GTA 6, social media marketing is now the target for all gaming genres. You can see it at the link below; it is the most cost-effective and direct way to market to a bespoke audience.

This is a blessing for a game with the global traction of GTA. It has such a committed consumer base that any rumor or piece of news goes viral and trends almost immediately, doing Rockstar’s marketing job for them. From a marketing perspective, it’s not about controlling the hysteria; it’s about controlling the narrative.

Inevitable Short-Term Success?

There aren’t many surefire bets in the gaming world, but the idea that GTA 6 will make billions of dollars in the first few months of its release is one of them. Now, just because a game has remarkable commercial success doesn’t mean that this translates into commercial recognition.

Yes, we have seen this happen with other GTA titles; it has broken sales records and garnered universal acclaim. However, we have also seen Rockstar and Take-Two deal with developers striking, influential names from GTA folklore moving on to start other projects, and a multitude of leaks and hacks dampening some of the anticipation within the gaming community.

For some, nothing can stop the unstoppable GTA 6 train. Financial success will be almost guaranteed. However, over the course of weeks and months after the release, when people have had a chance to dive into every facet of the game, we will get a much stronger idea of how good it is.

Final Thoughts

If the game can hold a candle to the might and acclaim of many of the PS2 generation GTA games, which are widely considered among the greatest games of all time, then GTA 6 will be a success on every level.

Ultimately, though, to address the point of our article today, GTA 6 is indeed too big to fail. You only need to look at how much hysteria it generates with even the smallest crumbs of news.

The pre-orders are likely to be in the tens of millions, and for Take-Two, the bottom line will be in the number of units it shifts and the money it generates via transactions. The numbers being touted are staggering. Without wanting to tempt fate, there’s no feasible angle where GTA 6 underperforms commercially.
