Microsoft Reportedly Funneled Minecraft Profits To Fuel XBOX Endeavors

Since Microsoft onboarded Asha Sharma to its XBOX division, there have been major changes that unfolded for the platform. The most recent in its ‘Resetting XBOX’ memo issued studios Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions & Ninja Theory, Undead Labs to exit XBOX Game Studios; going independent and being sold off respectively. Taking a note from its ‘Next 100 Days’ memo in June, Microsoft plans to redirect its 3% accountability margin for XBOX.

The conversation regarding XBOX & profitability has always been up for debate. In 2022, the XBOX boss Phil Spencer touted the platform to be generating profit with growing numbers for XBOX Game Pass. However, the year prior as per the Apple v. Epic Games case, it was revealed that XBOX never truly profited as a platform.

So while XBOX continued onward in the hardships it faced for over a decade, there are new details that reveal how much of this was practical for the firm. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft utilized its profit generated solely from the acquisition of Mojang’s Minecraft to fund its other endeavors throughout its first-party network.

“Profits from Minecraft, considered one of the most successful video games in the world, were used to fund the rest of the gaming portfolio, according to the person familiar with Xbox operations,” the report discloses. It is no secret the phenomenon that Minecraft has become even bumping into gaming titan like Pokémon & Tetris. The game was revealed in 2021 to generate over 1 trillion views on YouTube then.

From the same report, Bloomberg also shared details on how Microsoft will differentiate exclusivity to multiplatform. In that the live-service multiplayer titles are to ship universally whilst its “best games” are intended to be unique to XBOX. You can read the full report by heading here.
