Earlier in June, Microsoft offered a warning for what’s to come towards XBOX. In that, a proper ‘Reset’ is underway. In a memo released then, ‘Next 100 Days’ foreshadowed tough decisions will be made to recollect the platform to deliver a “stronger XBOX.” Well, that fatal blow came in the form of the ‘Resetting XBOX’ memo. In that it was revealed that Ninja Theory & Undead Labs are to be sold off whilst Double Fine & Compulsion Games explore being independent.
Another detail worth mentioning is that all currently announced titles will remain in development. Despite the decision, games are unaffected by the decision; including under new ownership. What has been confirmed previously is that exclusivity is a focus for the platform once more and that it plans to deliver a “reliable pipeline” of games via a ‘case-by-case’ approach.
Recently Bloomberg offered insight on the murmurs that are happening within Microsoft and issued additional context on what shared mindset is being bounced around the XBOX firm. In the report, it is disclosed that ambitions are to remain in place for platform exclusives. However, it was revealed that there is some direction the firm wants to follow for its in-house releases moving forward.
“While big multiplayer games will still be available on all major platforms, [Xbox] will make more of its best titles exclusive to Xbox so gamers have a reason to buy its console,” the report shares. This sentiment to deliver its multiplayer-focused IPs to more platforms is an ongoing cause that has only continued to manifest. As for what is to be unique to XBOX, only definitive platform releases are to remain exclusive like the recently confirmed Gears of War: E-Day.
One example of Microsoft already acting on this decision is State of Decay 3. Previously announced back in 2020, the game has been slated as a console & PC release. Howbeit, that was until the most recent trailer for the game in 2026 which verified a PlayStation 5 release is now planned for the sequel as well. You can read the full report by heading here.
