The digital frontier has shown to absorb plenty of the market share for PlayStation as Sony confirmed it plans to shutter further production for physical media by January 2028. The PlayStation firm further cements the idea by also implementing the maneuver through changes in production for its largest manufacturing plant in Austria to commence production on new components by next year.
As part of Sony’s commitment to the new shift, analysts have commented on the mindset shared at PlayStation. Aware of the anticipated pushback, Sony is to proceed unfazed by the campaigns against PlayStation and absorb any losses by the decision. Through the marketing side of PlayStation, it is becoming apparent that partnerships with the platform will also bring negative press to those associated with the brand moving forward already on social media.
And according to former Santa Monica Studio writer Alanah Pearce, Sony did foresee the backlash that the digital decision would bring to the platform. And that it even instructed employees for PlayStation that it could not comment on the matter anticipating the radio silence to quell the outrage. You can watch the segment of the video below:
“Sony already knew everyone would be pissed off. They knew this. People working at PlayStation first-party studios told me that Sony had the strictest social media guidelines for this particular thing that they’ve ever seen issued. Sony does regularly tell employees what can or can’t say about certain things.
“I was under a lot of guidelines when I was working on God of War Laufey. I still am, and they did send me guidelines regarding what I could say on the day that the game was announced. But in this instance, it is apparently the strictest that employees I spoke to have ever seen regarding public communications. They would only have done this if they knew it was going to be an enormous PR issue. This is no surprise to them.”
