Lethal League is a game that has been around for quite a bit. It’s been around on PC since 2014, so the move to console has taken a while but it’s worth it.
Gameplay is simple, jump around and wack a ball back and fourth until it hits another player gets knocked out. Press Square to hit the ball, Cross to Jump, and Circle to knock the ball into a “neutral zone” until someone else hits the ball. Each time you hit the ball, it’ll get faster and you want to counter it to make it go faster and faster so it will be harder for others to knock you out. Eventually balls can become really, and I mean REALLY fast and almost seem impossible to hit but once you do, it’s the best feeling ever because it’s gonna be even harder for someone else to hit it. On average you’ll get 8 lives (that’s default, can be adjusted) which will make matches with 4 friends even better, the game will be constant action for a long period of time.
For modes, we got Online (up to 4 players), Versus (up to 4 players), and under the Extra menu there is Training and Challenge (1v1). There’s six playable characters. Candyman, Switch, Dice, I prefer Candyman just because he looks like Pac-Man. Each have their custom colors and some (like Latch) are even animals!
This art style might be the best I’ve seen in a game. It just looks so gorgeous no matter what map you go and play. The game has a very pixelated look, but it’s colorful and bright. While stages playable in 2D only, each map is 2.5D and have stuff like rubble or buildings in the background to fill up the room. It gives me a heavy Devolver Digital vibe. There’s seven total stages to battle around in. Some seem very tight and feel like there’s not much room for you to fight in but you’ll manage. Screen Shaking and White Flashes can be turned off for those that don’t want it or can make them sick. I’m glad this is put in for those that can’t have them. :)
While most of what I’m saying is good, it’s time to finally address the bad. Firstly, there’s not enough stages or characters. I played a LOT and it’s very repetitive. I would love to see free content or even potentially DLC if it means we can have more stages and characters playable. Also as I meantioned above, some maps feel cramped instead of a bit more open playing field.
I’ve played maybe 12-13 hours of Lethal League by now and it’s just been a BLAST! From every kick and jump it just makes me be hyped up for the next match!
Trophy Time! Lethal League has 9 Bronze, 3 Silver, and 1 Gold trophy. No Platinum is present.
PlayStation Extras: this game doesn’t support PS4 Pro or PS VR.
In short, this game is like PS All Stars but instead of fighting they’re shooting baseballs at each other. It’s like Rocket League with cars and soccer, it doesn’t make sense but it works out so damn well![rwp-review id=”0″]
