Sega’s initiative to bring retro titles from the Sega Dreamcast to the more recent Nintendo Switch is very close to becoming a reality. Which would be insane to see for both companies if the titles in the library from the 1999 console are to be available on the Nintendo eShop.

M2 CEO Naoki Horii spoke with Japan-based videogame outlet Famitsu about the near concluding position to bringing Dreamcast titles to Nintendo’s hybrid console. The developer specializes specifically in emulation and states that the studio is in the final steps to reaching their goal. Also mentioning that M2 are still deciding on which way to bring the emulated titles to the Switch.

“Depending on whether you are going to emulate or pick up the source code and make it remake, the transplant work will be different,” Horii told gaming magazine, which was then run through translation software. “I think that Sega chooses for each title there, but since emulation can also increase the number of other games that can be emulated.”

Emulated gaming has become a major conversation when trying to bring previous gen titles onto modern hardware. As we already know that the feature is present on Xbox One to play Xbox 360 titles, it’s shown to be successful enough to be pursued on other platforms as well. Though the PlayStation 4 doesn’t support backwards compatibility, we might see it present with the upcoming console from Sony in the near future.

Though remasters have become the norm especially during this generation, emulation as a viable option would benefit both the publisher and even the consumer depending on how it’s decide to go upon. Looking at how Nintendo brings older titles to new consoles, fans would most likely have to repurchase their favorite games to play on the Nintendo Switch.
