From the announcement of Google’s video game streaming platform Stadia and leading up to the service’s official debut this month, the most noted selling point that the tech giant advertised the cloud-based initiative was that all games could reach the approximate 4K resolution backed with 60 frames per second performance for each title available on Stadia. However, for the users who actually went and purchased the $129.99 Founders Edition can say otherwise.

Unfortunately, Stadia owners have later discovered that this is not the case, even for billboard titles like Destiny 2 which is virtually “free” for all current owners of the platform as the game does not ever reach a native 4K output. The same can also be said for Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 as competing platforms like Xbox One X and of course the PC iteration of last year’s action western can do so in contrast to Stadia.

Google since the release of Stadia earlier this month was faced with accusations that points to be false advertising as the promised fixed resolutions and game performance was not available for some of the most anticipated projects on the platform. Google in response shared that this is due to the game still requiring improvements from the developer.

Here is the full statement from Google on the matter:

“Stadia streams at 4K and 60 FPS – and that includes all aspects of our graphics pipeline from game to screen: GPU, encoder and Chromecast Ultra all outputting at 4k to 4k TVs, with the appropriate internet connection. Developers making Stadia games work hard to deliver the best streaming experience for every game,” a spokesperson at Google elaborates on the subject. “We expect that many developers can, and in most cases will, continue to improve their games on Stadia. And because Stadia lives in our data centers, developers are able to innovate quickly while delivering even better experiences directly to you without the need for game patches or downloads.”

While Chromecast Ultra does ping out a native 4K signal from the device, that certainly does not show to be the case for the current roster of titles. Possibly is it that developers just render the respected Stadia port at a lower resolution expecting the software to upscale to the promised 4K output? That is left unknown as this story continues to develop.

Do you own Stadia, and have you faced any similar problems when playing on the platform?

Stadia is available now on PC, television, and mobile devices.
