The Call of Duty franchise was a major seller for Microsoft upon its decision to acquire Activision Blizzard King. However, featuring the series on its premium subscription XBOX Game Pass was a poor choice; costing the firm $300 million annually. This resulted in the decision to level expectations for future additions with at least a year from its street date, it announced back in April.

Over the past few weeks, there have been rumors that the classic Black Ops duology from Treyarch is on the way to newer PlayStation units. This weekend, fans on PlayStation were excited to see both 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and 2012’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II be ported to modern PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 5. This includes the multiplayer versions as well.

But, with the confusion mixing platforms & season passes, there was uncertainty on what the multiplayer is compatible with matchmaking. On X, the official @CODUpdates page verified crossplay – regardless of season pass – is available for both Black Ops titles respectively.

This is not the only instance of legacy Black Ops finding its way back into the public space. Back in March, Call of Duty: Warzone announced that a Black Ops’ Blackout-inspired ‘Black Ops Royale’ mode would be added to the live-service. The free-to-play mode features no loadouts, bullet drop, and Trauma Kit implementation to emulate the original mode.

Looking ahead, Infinity Ward is returning for 2026 with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The newest entry brings the series to South Korea: the first time since Sledgehammer Games’ Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you planning to jump into crossplay for either Black Ops or Black Ops II?

Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II is out now for PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 5; also available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
