Francis Ford Coppola’s award-winning film Apocalypse Now is underway to becoming it’s own videogame via Kickstarter. Coppola’s Vietnam based film on the horrors of war won’t just be the standard first-person shooter that we’re so use to seeing from other franchises though. Instead will be a more immersive and psychological horror game with role-playing mechanics to present the same mood that the film has almost 40 years ago.
With help from several directors, producers, writers and designers who’ve made fan favorite games to be part of this crowdfunded project. The development team led by Rob Auten, the lead writer on Gears of War, Far Cry, and Battlefield. Lawrence Liberty, the executive producer of Fallout: New Vegas. Montgomery Markland, lead producer of both kickstart successes Torment and Wasteland 2. And Obsidian Entertainment’s Digital Director Josh Sawyer.
The main plot of the game will be to assassinate Colonel Walter E. Kurtz while experiencing the story as Captain Benjamin Willard. Starting the game in Saigon, Willard nearly losing his mind from what’s happening around him with his past distorting the audio and visuals. This is a survival horror, so there will be segments of stealth along with dialog. But how the game is played by your actions, what you say, and how you act with the characters will determine your outcome throughout the game. Willard is not exactly the conversation type, but he gets to the point in the conversations.
Coppola’s Vietnam-era film translated from Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novella Hearts Of Darkness was not the first to have an attempt, in a way, of an game adaptation. His 1972 film The Godfather got reworked into a game back in 2006 with average scores for the game. But from Coppola himself stating on his thought on the game as: “a misuse of film.”
Leading towards why this title will be crowdfunded on Kickstarter with publishers of his picking for it. The goal set for the game is at $900,000 with over $100,000 as of today (1/27/2017) with less than four weeks to reach their objective. Stay updated with Rectifygaming.com for an update of when the game makes it’s goal in the upcoming weeks.
