While interactive entertainment has been on a steady rise among other forms of creative mediums such as music, film, and television, the industry has swiftly overtaken in profitability that was once dominated by Hollywood. And slowly, awards has been accustomed to video games as well. In 2021, Respawn Entertainment’s Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond won an Oscar for Best Short Documentary.
Additionally, Kirby Superstar also won a Grammy last year as well from 8Bit Band as well. But in 2023, the Grammys have fully integrated gaming with a new category – Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. The nominees include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy and Old World.
With the Grammys taking place this week, it was revealed that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla took the award. The win was given for the original score for the 2020 game’s expansion ‘Dawn of Ragnarok’. Composer Stephanie Economou shared some words on winning the award:
I’m honored, especially because this is the first year this category exists. So it’s big, it’s a big thing, and I feel very validated by this community and I’m beyond grateful to be here. When asked if there was anyone she forgot to thank during her speech. I hope I covered most people, but truly, the main people I want to thank for this win are the musicians, the soloists who made this score what it is. Everyone who made this score really special, I share this moment with you.
The story expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla shipped back in 2022 as part of a second year roadmap for the game. Unlike other Assassin’s Creed titles before it, Valhalla is the first game to properly incorporate a second full year of new content. This also included ‘The Last Chapter’ update which concludes the story in England.
As for other plans regarding Assassin’s Creed, there are five projects on the way. Via Netflix, a unique game is said to be in the works for its platform. Not to mention Project Jade, Project Red, and Project Hexe which are being conjured up as well. Furthermore, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is also slated to release sometime in 2023.
