About a month ago, developer Bungie blatantly shared that the ongoing first-person shooter, RPG Destiny 2 will be arriving to the upcoming next-generation of console hardware. But while it was unsure what this would mean exactly for current owners of the 2017-released title, it surely was an exciting reveal regardless. Now during its recent livestream this week, the team unveils more details on the support for the coming systems.
Elaborating on the newer versions for Destiny 2 – Game Director Luke Smith tells that “the game will run at 60 frames per second at 4K resolution on the new hardware.” Adding on, Destiny 2 General Manager Mark Noseworthy continued the conversation by adding that current owners of the game’s content will not have to repurchase any of it again. “Whatever content you already own […] in Destiny 2 will come with you to your next-generation console of choice at no extra charge.”
On PlayStation, you’ll be able to upgrade to PlayStation 5 for free and on Xbox we’ll support Smart Delivery – also for free.
This mean if you own Destiny 2 expansion content on those platforms – now or in the future or by Beyond Light in September, you can keep playing on the same family consoles for free without buying the expansions again.
Continuing on regarding cross-generation support, Noseworthy then announces that cross-platform play will also be integrated between platforms and to also include cross-gen implementation as well. “We’re going to support intergenerational cross-play within each console platform ecosystem.” He goes on by concluding that cross-gen play is a priority for 2020 and the following year will be the focus to bridge competing systems ultimately.
Delving deeper into what makes this announcement interesting is that PlayStation 5 support will be implement especially. Regarding previous generation titles, Sony has yet to disclose next-generation upgrades for the new console. While Microsoft has been very talkative about Smart Delivery integration for current-generation software, the same cannot be said of Sony’s side of things. So it is unsure how that will operate for DualSense users later on.
In related news that was shared during the livestream, Bungie also unveiled Beyond Light expansion for Destiny 2 as well as the following forecast of content that will ship to the game well into 2022. You can read the full report by heading here.
