“Black Ops 7 is still a very fun and new content-filled game even if it’s like the others in some ways, and each year I’ll always end up right back where I started. Playing Call of Duty. Looking at BO7 from the outside in, to a veteran, knowing we will at the bare minimum have a year of content, […] this era of COD is honestly far more content packaged in the end.” Rectify Gaming wrote for its review for 2025’s Call of Duty; scored a 8.5/10.

Looking behind the scenes for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Activision has been very reactionary to how to handle this year’s release. Although it was a given the game would a launch title on Xbox Game Pass, it has proven to also lose millions too. Came the release of Battlefield 6, the firm revealed Black Ops 7 would drastically readjust its skilled based matchmaking system for the multiplayer.

However, things are not like they used to be and former Sledgehammer Studios head Glen Schofield is convinced the future for the IP under Xbox is not so glowing. Speaking to Video Game Chronicle, Schofield says a drastic drop off is to be considered due to the handling of other prominent Xbox shooters already.

“I worry about it immensely, I really do. Because what’s happening to Gears of War, where’s Halo… you know what I mean? And you look at EA, you look at these big companies, and I’m like where’s the Strike games? Where’s this game? And there’s so many that just fall by the wayside. Unfortunately, once you’re assimilated by one of these companies, I think you take on some of their traits. The other thing is, I don’t know, but I would imagine that the Call of Duty bonus system is out, and now you have theirs, and people are going to go ‘that isn’t that’.”

Schofield also goes on to argue games now don’t even meet standards for those that released over a decade ago. “They just aren’t as good. They aren’t the same. Treyarch’s still really good but you know… I feel like I got lucky. I feel like I was at the heyday of EA during my time there. I mean, it was a who’s who working there. And then when I got to Activision, I made Modern Warfare 3 (2011). As a matter of fact, Modern Warfare 3 was the last Call of Duty to win Action Game of the Year, and my other two games were nominated for it. But now, you know, you don’t see them.”

Are you worried about the state of Call of Duty at Xbox?
