The current timeline we live in is on the forefront of a pathogen-based pandemic: medical advisors urge individuals to isolate themselves as health officials continue to research for a potential cure, or to better understand the organisms that make us and what triggers such a lethal reaction. And while that is in process, developer Gearbox Software has announced to be assisting medical research through video game.
More specifically, the studio shared to be doing so through the means of Borderlands 3. How exactly? With a new minigame, Borderlands Science. In the efforts to grasp a stronger concept of the foreign organisms that define our physical body, Gearbox Software alongside McGill University, Massively Multiplayer Online Science, and The Microsetta Initiative has built this project to organize information on human DNA.
While computers generally take the job of organizing said information, the substance of human-based characteristics on the other hand is less capable of doing so. Instead, this partnership introduced a minigame to correctly orchestrate the information. You can watch the trailer in the video below:
Simple enough, there are four separate pieces – each based off of the Vault Hunters from the 2019 title. The objective is to align as many alike pieces in a horizontal line. While there might not be a complete row, doing so regardless sends information to the collaborating institutions to help with the research that standard machines are unable to perform.
“Borderlands Science exists in part because computers aren’t perfect at organizing this data and make lots of small mistakes that can corrupt subsequent analysis, but the game you play to solve this complex task is easy to understand and play.” Gearbox shares that players who participate and complete the puzzles will provide in-game currency which can then be redeemed for unique cosmetics and boosters to apply when playing Borderlands 3.
In other borderlands 3 news, it was just last month that the second expansion for the game, Guns, Love, and Tentacles: A Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock released. You can read the full overview by heading here.
Will you play Borderlands Science to better medical research?
