Although Microsoft is truly identified for pioneering console exclusives opening its gates to PC release the sum of last generation from Xbox One, Sony Interactive Entertainment is finally opening up to the idea as well. Although the firm is not following through with the initiative for console-selling installments at launch unlike its competitor, hallmark releases are hitting storefronts like Steam periodically.
In 2022 alone, we witnessed God of War arrive to the platform with the upcoming Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Collection coming later this year for PC as well. But, the teams that make up first-party PlayStation wanted more games to hit PC overall. In the past, God of War game director Cory Barlog shared his interest to bring the game to PC, however, it was not his decision to make.
Speaking with Game Informer earlier this year, it was revealed that he is not the only one with the same mindset. Elaborating on the vision, he told that it was a shared idea between other teams at PlayStation Studios that asked Sony to further expand on the decision.
I think it was the collective of studios all over saying this is a really good idea. We should be looking into this. Eventually, I think it reached that tipping point. When we had sent so many suggestion box suggestions that they were like, “I’m tired of hearing all this. Fine, we’ll do this.” It’s a process. We’re still figuring it out as a company and as individual studios how to do this and what the process and strategy will be.
Howbeit, there is no certainty as to what games will come next to PC after the Uncharted bundle. But, there is hope God of War Ragnarok makes the cut soon now that the foot is in the door for PC release. Regardless, Barlog reiterates on the decision being left in Sony’s hands despite him alongside other staff fully supporting more games coming to the platform.
“Right now, we’re taking it one game at a time, kind of looking at each one and determining, ‘Okay, is this the best thing?’ And we’ll gauge how it does. Do people enjoy it? Did we do it right? Is there anything we did wrong? What can we do better in the future if we do this again? But at the end of the day, ultimately, it’s Sony’s decision.”
Ultimately, it comes down to the profitability for Sony Interactive Entertainment. In a financial report from August 2020, the firm explained that the decision will be swayed by the projected turnout for the port. You can read the full report by heading here.
