It’s worth exploring the latest trends shaping the gaming world. In doing so, we can look at the challenges and the problems that lie ahead for both developers and consumers.

Working From Home

It’s worth pointing out that a lot of gaming jobs right now are being completed remotely, often from the comfort of an individual’s home. That’s true for people who are testing games and it’s becoming more common for game developers to work from home as well. Part of the reason for this was definitely COVID with bigger businesses switching to a socially distanced business model. However, smaller companies often work from home too including indie developers. People often don’t realize this as these companies tend to have a business or personal virtual mailbox to make it seem like they have a major city address. This trend is definitely here to stay as it makes everything far more affordable.

Releasing Incomplete Games

If you think of the most recent AAA titles, then you’re going to struggle to think of one that wasn’t released before it was fully ready for the market. There are a few exceptions like The Last Of Us Part II but a lot of the games launched over the past couple of years required massive matches that came months after the original release. Perhaps the most glaring example of this was Cyberpunk. According to the experts, this one is still broken nearly a year after the original release date. This was surprising as the developer never had a history of releasing games that weren’t finished. So, why is this becoming more common? Well, it’s partly because developers are under enormous levels of pressure to get a game on the market as quickly as possible. They often bow to consumer demand and aim to launch a product when more people are more likely to buy even if there are issues with the game.

Remakes And Re-Releases

Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet, And Clank – the list goes on and on. It seems companies are intent on re-releasing or remastering old games that already have a massive following and a huge level of demand. But people have noted that this pattern is becoming more dangerous for the gaming industry. For instance, recently we learned that Naughty Dog is planning to remake The Last Of Us. Part of the problem here and the reason why people are wary is that it suggests that developers are taking fewer risks. Instead, they are just repackaging what has worked before for what is essentially easy money. While they still need to release a quality product, it’s easy to market something with a built-in audience. Some people expect the next Uncharted game to be a reboot as well.

It’s clear then that while there are positive trends in the gaming industry right now, there are also several issues that do need to be addressed. It’s important to make sure that developers do work to strengthen the gaming industry and that consumers ultimately make sure they vote with their wallets.
