Nearly a decade into her position as a Creative Director at Tango Gameworks, Ikumi Nakamura announced she will be departing from her post at the Japanese developer. Following the release of The Evil Within & The Evil Within 2 alongside current work on GhostWire: Tokyo, Nakamura moved on to form a new independent team in Japan which she revealed in a CutScenes video last March.
While Nakamura herself did not express the route the new team will be heading directly in terms of the first project at the unnamed developer, she did explain her desire to use experience from the industry to form a new team and conjure up an original IP. It was this month almost a year after the original announcement of her next chapter that Nakamura made it official.
In that, Nakamura revealed the name of her new game studio, Unseen. You can watch the announcement video below:
“I’m building a new team in a way I never have experienced before. Working and learning with this amazing group of talent raises the bar for all of us. I love breaking boundaries and making people say ‘WOW’. As artists, we use our imagination to see the INVISIBLE. WE ARE UNSEEN,” Nakamura shares in the video.
“WE ARE BORDERLESS. WE ARE ARTISTS. WE WORK WITHOUT BEING SEEN. The Tokyo studio acts as a terminal. A place where different cultures intersects. A hub for different artists to gather. We want to transcend into different mediums beyond the realm of video games. We are a group of artists who transcend traditional borders, working without being seen.”
On Nakamura’s statement in exploring other forms of entertainment, likely film & books, this is not the first firm from the region to also share the same ambition. Previously, Kojima Productions officially opened a new division in California dedicated to the venture. You can read the full report by heading here.
