One of the largest concerns aimed at PlayStation was the continued path for multiplatform support. In that, Sony Interactive Entertainment would deliver new experiences outside of its core console and even issuing some of its first-party properties to newer systems as well. Previously, it was confirmed that multiplatform was the direction for future PlayStation projects, president Hiroki Totoki said then.
Additionally, live-service was a major driver for this initiative as well. Witnessing the success on PC and on console from other publishers, it was understood that PlayStation was eager to do the same. For 2024, that would be the start of the endeavor with little to no legacy IPs being released this year. What did get pushed is one prominent game – Marathon – from Sony-acquired Bungie.
In a new development via a PlayStation hiring post, thanks TweakTown, mobile is still in the crosshairs for Sony Interactive Entertainment. The listing reads on about pushing for smartphones as well as its effort for free-to-play games as well from the PlayStation company for mobile devices.
“PlayStation Studios Mobile is seeking an experienced software engineer to design PlayStation’s platform for developing, publishing, and operating free-to-play mobile games. An individual in this role will spearhead the design and implementation of this platform; work in partnership with internal teams to connect mobile games to PlayStation services; and ensure that all mobile games meet PlayStation’s quality standards.”
Of course, PlayStation is not the only console leader pushing for more mobile presence in the market. Recently, it was reported that the Xbox Mobile Store is planned to ship sometime in July later this year. You can read the full report by heading here.
