The business model for Xbox Game Pass is commendable in what it achieved in the timeframe & conditions of the current reputation for Xbox. But, things went for the worse when Microsoft decided to increase its Ultimate tier to $30 a month for the service. While bundling more perks, many were left feeling insulted with the decision. The firm defended the decision saying “we’re listening to the feedback of players and the community to try to provide them with more of what they’re asking for.”
But, things only ramped up against the Xbox firm as a result. Previously, it was reported that Microsoft is facing a $300 million deficit annually with the decision to bundle Call of Duty in the subscription. All things considered, Xbox Game Pass was becoming a shell of what it once was. Now arriving to this week, Microsoft effective immediately reduced the price for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate & PC Game Pass to omit changed from prior leadership.
Also this week, Asha Sharma & Matt Booty laid out a testament for the Xbox brand discussing plans on strengthening the platform’s identity. Part of that includes finding new footing for its financial earnings as well as exploring flexibility within Xbox Game Pass too. From Windows Central, it is reported that a new tier to ‘pick your own plan’ is being shopped around at Microsoft.
Going into specifics, it is disclosed that users could find select perks from tiers that best suit what offers the best value for subscribers. It has become extremely clear that the additions featured with Xbox Game Pass is not suited for every user and offering better options to dress the service to different tastes would be ideal for better retention. There have already been leaked back-end APIs like ‘Triton’ which focuses on first-party games specifically for Xbox Game Pass.
There is also the reported Xbox Cloud Streaming tier as well. The tier at the time of reporting was understood to feature ads, but would be a free option rather than a premium subscription. Elsewhere, it was also indicated that the service in its internal testing would only feature a five hour window of playtime per month. You can read the full report by heading here.
