Just last week it was announced at Microsoft’s 2019 press conference that the long awaited Phantasy Star Online 2 will be dropping first on Xbox One in the U.S.. Following the announcement, Sega disclosed that other revealed information regarding the coming title were restricted due to the EMEA release and more will be discussed in the coming months.
Reflecting on the original 2000 title, we are all aware that the game was available for not only Microsoft’s Xbox, but also Sony’s PlayStation, Sega’s Dreamcast, and the Nintendo GameCube. Leaving fans to wonder when the sequel will debut on opposing platforms as well: which now seems to have been confirmed by Xbox Head Phil Spencer.
In an interview at the Los Angeles event with outlet Giant Bomb, Spencer discussed the release plans for the Spring-aimed MMORPG. During the interview, Spencer shared that the title “will end up on all platforms” at some point following the initial release for Microsoft’s current console. Though the Xbox One announcement is seemingly paired with PC as well for Windows 10, this leaves the remaining PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch to be the platforms Spencer was referring to.
Prior information to support Spencer’s statement can be deprived from the reveal trailer for the game as that at one point the trailer reveals that the title will offer “online action combat with cross-play.” Though this does not fully back the chances of seeing the game on Sony’s & Nintendo’s platforms, it does give some footing for future reference.
As for the title dropping for other regions following the release in the United States, Spencer did share that the decision is out of his grasp as “Sega’s ultimately responsible for that.” Areas like Europe for instance will have to watch from a far as fans across the pond will finally get their hands on the title after the Japan release back in 2012.
Phantasy Star Online 2 will be available for Xbox One and PC in Spring 2020.
