One of the biggest and most questionable approaches many fans are still trying to understand is PlayStation’s drive for live-service. While successful in some markets, it appears to be an effort not necessary for success for the company. Despite whether or not necessary, the firm has already executed some titles in this market. In one respect, it was one of the most influential releases for 2024 with Helldivers 2.

However, the same can also be said as the prime example for how not to do. When Concord released, players were already indifferent about the hero shooter and it only took two weeks for the game to be shut down permanently. Even more, developer Firewalk Studios was also closed as well that following October. And now with new titles still on the horizon and Concord proving what the worse can happen, Sony does express its current stance on live-service.

Speaking to Famitsu, Sony Interactive Entertainment co-CEO Herman Hulst discusses the continued drive for more live-service titles at PlayStation. Explaining to the Japanese outlet, Hulst remains committed to the initiative despite the performance of Concord.

We are also continuing to grow in the live services space, and Helldivers 2 has been a huge success. In forming a strong portfolio, the Studio Business Group places great emphasis on the rigorous selection of games that provide a great experience for players. […] Going forward, we will continue to focus on developing live service titles, as well as story-driven single-player titles that players are looking for.

“The game business is constantly changing, driven by a variety of factors, including technological advancements, new genres and ways of playing. However, one thing that hasn’t changed is people’s desire for a great entertainment experience, and the focus on gaming continues to grow. But it also created competition, and like many companies in the industry, it had to make changes to its operations in order to solidify a more sustainable operating base.”

Hulst continues: “We’ve learned a lot as we’ve established our ability to develop high-quality live service titles within SIE. Helldivers 2 has been able to attract a large number of players through its continuous content offering, and has delivered results that confirm the potential of a live-service title.” One element that is for certain are PlayStation Network requirements. Previously, the firm confirmed more titles will ask for sign-in authentication to play on Steam.

Across the bend are titles like Fairgame$ & Marathon. In one report, it was understood that the Jade Raymond heist live-service title is being received favorably. However, internal projections do not solidify commercial success as Concord was also a belove project when internally tested too. You can read the full report by heading here.
