Infinity Ward’s upcoming installment for the Call of Duty franchise just kicked off the first of two online beta segments this past weekend, and with this week’s set to launch on Thursday, that also means Microsoft’s Xbox One and PC will be joining the multiplayer mix for Modern Warfare. In a recent blog post, Activision lays out the scheme of how cross-platform play will work between the three platforms.
Easy enough, all users anticipating to play the approaching beta will only be required to create a Call of Duty account if not done already. Atop of owning your platform’s respected online subscription, nothing else is required to play. Cross-play is shared to be an opt-in, opt-out scenario: players can decide if choosing to play with opposing platforms or sticking to multiplayer lobbies based on their respected hardware.
However, there are more filters that players can decide to implement if opting in for cross-platform play. Activision details that you can be assigned to a lobby that only pairs players who use gamepads/controllers and the same with keyboard & mouse players as well. And if you have no preference, there is another alternative that integrates all player schemes for the beta.
The most interesting point of the post revolved around the game’s post-launch content plan that the developer has planned for Modern Warfare. Since the game has abandoned the Season Pass to structure the game’s downloadable content, Infinity Ward plans to release said DLC in one segment when ready.
Most Post-launch gameplay content, including new multiplayer maps, new multiplayer modes, special ops missions and more will release simultaneously across all platforms.
This will be the first time in a decade since content for a Call of Duty title is aimed to release on all platforms concurrently, tracing back to the publisher’s marketing rights deal with Microsoft in 2009; and later to Sony in 2015.
Although all hardware will be given the new content at the same time, Activision shares in a separate statement that PlayStation 4 owners should expect a special gift upon the game’s launch later next month. “For the very first time in our partnership with PlayStation, PS4 players will have an exciting Day 1 advantage.”
The second Modern Warfare multiplayer will be active for players who pre-purchased the game on September 19. The beta will then transition to open lobbies on September 21 this Saturday.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will launch on October 25, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
