Project Scorpio has been assumed to be progressing well, given Phil Spencer’s previous contentment with the hardware’s development, but we haven’t really had any indicators or markers crop up to give us any real information. Windows Central’s Jez Corden changed that early this afternoon, sharing a good chunk of news regarding Project Scorpio’s progress, and the performance framework planned for the next few months.
Corden, who has shared many exclusive details regarding Project Scorpio, decided to clarify some remarks he’d heard on Project Scorpio dev kits, their specifications, and how they’re performing for those using them. First, he discusses that as the hardware is complete enough to be sent out in dev kit form, the software will be largest focal point leading up to the device’s reveal and launch later this year. The dev kits are reportedly underperforming compared to target levels, apparently currently operating “below 80 percent of their planned system performance.”
According to Corden, May’s update to the dev kit will bring the hardware to “between 80 and 90 percent of its target output.” The subsequent June dev kit update, with its hardware-specific improvements, will, according to Corden, bring the hardware to its full 6 teraflops of processing power. Corden writes that “developers will be able to begin submitting their games for Project Scorpio certification with [the June] update.”
Corden also discusses game support on Project Scorpio hardware, noting that game developers will be able to start including “4K assets and relevant code” in a singular set of code for use on the shared Xbox One platform that Project Scorpio will be compatible with. Furthermore, developers will also apparently be able to code their games with code that only activates when it detects Project Scorpio hardware.
Now, knowing Project Scorpio’s progress, fans should feel much more reassured than when a retailer or executive being impressed or pleased with its progress. And while Project Scorpio is likely still a few months away from a public reveal to any extent, we’ll likely hear more progress before then. If we learn more regarding Project Scorpio in specific, we’ll keep you updated, but until then stay tuned to Rectify Gaming for the latest.
