In a statement provided to Kotaku UK, Rockstar said it knew eventually the “technical capacity of what the older generation of consoles can handle” would max out, and no longer be able to handle such significant updates.

“We will no longer release GTA Online updates for PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles” – Rockstar

Rockstar went on to say, “We have continued to optimize the entire game over time in order to squeeze as much memory as we possibly could out of the last-generation hardware and at some point, continuing to add content for those systems could cause the risk of instability to the game overall,”

Last December Rockstar had stated that some updates to GTA Online would only be “technically possible on the new hardware,” but it had hoped to do all “it could for the other four consoles as long as possible.”

GTA Online Freemode Events were announced earlier today for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, with PS3 and Xbox 360 notably absent from the platform list.
