PlayStation is not hiding the new direction it is pursuing come 2028. Last week, it was revealed that the platform will be going completely digital; withdrawing from its physical release tradition since the birth of the brand. In even worse timing, it also shared an announcement for the demise of the PlayStation 3 & PlayStation 3 servers as well which will be fulfilled by 2027.
And although many anticipated it to make an update on reconsidering, that does not look to be in PlayStation’s interest. It was reported that a major production operation in Austria is transitioning its manufacturing to optical microlenses which replaces the pillar production line for its physical media components. The new mass production that will be fully embraced by next year is part of a larger AI-driven initiative, one in which Sony expresses to “unleash the creativity” for the platform.
Recently, eagle-eyed users have now discovered that there is a clause in the PlayStation Terms of Service which will drastically impact users once this digital lifestyle is implemented for the platform. In section 21.2, it is revealed that users will be voided of their library let alone their entire account if left inactive for 36 months.
“f you have not used your Account for at least 36 months we may take steps to close it. In that case, we will contact you via the email address registered to your Account and give you 6 months to either log in to your Account or contact us and tell us to keep your Account open,” it reads. Section 21.3 adds: “After your Account is closed, you will not be able to access the PlayStation Online Services or use the Digital Products purchased with that Account. Account closure is irreversible.”
Elsewhere this week, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier enlightens the internet with some of the shared mindset Sony intends with the digital direction for PlayStation. He elaborates the decision is mainly a monetary benefit for the firm and that Sony anticipates to absorb the loss on the decision, but the number is not greater than those who game exclusively digital on PlayStation.
