god of war Egyptian mythology

Developer Santa Monica Studio blew the competition away in 2018 with a definitive return to the God of War franchise with the latest titular entry following the story of protagonist Kratos alongside his son, Atreus. The Game of the Year recipient stood tall for the already sky breaking benchmark that games have fixed when it comes to reception, and due to the commercial success the game became it is a good guess we would see a new installment later on in the new decade.

However, since the initial release of the game, no new information have been brought to fruition regarding additional story content or the next game. Director Cory Barlog did brush upon a pitched campaign expansion for the 2018 title, but declared that the concept was “too ambitious” simply for DLC: which could suggest this might have then sprouted the foundation for the follow-up.

Regardless, the first tangible instance confirming the game’s development might have possibly been teased by a developer at the California studio. According to a tweet from Kim Newman, the Narrative Director can be seen in full motion capture attire implying to be working on the next big title.

“Feels good to be back in the suit,” Newman quotes in the tweet as she strikes a pose for the image. Although developers are finally returning back to the studio after this past holiday season, Newman’s post suggests that she is finally beginning to capture for her next project at Santa Monica Studio. What that new project is exactly is left to speculation for the time being, but the likeliness that the team would pursue a sequel to God of War is the best guess I’d say.

Looking at the timing of the post in conjunction of the soon arriving PlayStation 5 at the other end of 2020, don’t expect to see any official news regarding the unannounced follow-up anytime soon. While we are still unsure what titles will truly launch on the new hardware, one being from Santa Monica Studio does not seem to be on the menu.

In other new related to the God of War team, former Senior Staff Environment Artist Erik Jakobsen has been reported to departing from the team to work with Xbox Game Studios’ The Initiative. You can read the full report by heading here.

God of War is out now for PlayStation 4.
