PlayStation 6 Production Costs Inches Close To $1K, Chances It Won’t Feature A Disc Drive Still

Currently, there is a precedent more concerning than the next-generation of PlayStation: physical releases. Even though it is hard to avoid at this point, it is clearly apparent that Sony has decided to pull the plug on PlayStation releasing games in a physical capacity by 2028. The announcement was paired with the shuttering of PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Vita servers also being shuttered fully in 2027.

The byproduct of the decision is already showing to be consequential for users in select regions. For Latin America, users are being notified that the pricing is on the horizon of being impacted with regional pricing going into effect. The decision is likely to increase the cost for games. And, through a discovered clause in the PlayStation Terms of Service, section 21.2 will pull ownership of your digital library through account deactivation if left inactive for over 36 months.

And although Sony has commented that there is no determining when the PlayStation 6 will release yet, reports have surfaced online on what the next-generation console will offer. From leaker Kepler_L2 on ResetEra, it is revealed that the new SKU will cost close to $1,000. In the post, the leaker told that bill of materials for the has increased, with a quote of $760. Sony is said to now price it around $960.

To also put into consideration is that the new console is likely to not come with a disc drive. Atop of the recent stories of PlayStation’s digital fate ahead, Kepler_L2 did indicate back in March that the PlayStation 6 will not incorporate a blu-ray disc reader. Niko Partners’ analyst Daniel Ahmad echoed a similar belief as well. “Pretty much confirms PS6 will be digital only,” he said, commenting on the announcement from July 1st.

So while the component has a high possibility of being absent from the PlayStation 6, the cost is still exponentially higher for the next-generation regardless of the decision. Around the time of the digital shift for PlayStation, it was reported that a major production plant for its disc readers were to welcome new equipment to enter mass production for optical microlenses in 2027.
