2024 marked a pivotal time for Sega when it marked it ‘The Year of Shadow’. This was handled with unique marketing alongside new content. This included the film Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as well as Sonic X Shadow Generations as well. “Sonic X Shadow Generations is a strong dual game experience that marries nostalgia with innovation,” our review reads. “It’s nice to revisit Sonic’s old stomping grounds from 11 years ago but the real star of the show is Shadow’s brand new campaign.”
Going beyond 2024, Sega already shipped Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds which delivered a breath of fresh air to the racing series with the inclusion of extreme gear as well as a rich post-launch cast to be added as well. One title that many were speculating to come next from Sega is Sonic Heroes. From its activity online, many understood there are nuggets of hope pointing to a remaster for the 2003 release.
But according to this new move by Sega, there is another title that might be on its menu already. In that, it was revealed via Japan’s public trademark domain Chizai Watch that Sega recently filed a new trademark for ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’. For those unfamiliar, Sonic Team shipped a dedicated spin-off in 2005 that followed the background of the ultimate lifeform.
Players that experienced Shadow Generations are more than familiar with many of the elements of that title seeping in the new story. The team even remixed some of the original tracks from Shadow the Hedgehog as well – including All Hail Shadow. If Sega were to pursue a proper remake/remaster, assets and other properties of the game have already been curated for this new project.
As of current projects tied to Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega just announced a new multi-year licensing agreement with The Olympics to offer new branding with Sonic the Hedgehog which commences in 2026. You can read the full report by heading here.
