Originating since the initial announcement for the PlayStation 5 Pro, the biggest impression left by the system was its pricing at $699. However, there is more that the console offers with its ‘PlayStation 5 Pro Enhancement’ program. Launching with more than 50 titles supported, players can re-experience definitive PlayStation 5 titles with a new lens. But, the powerhouse is not all delivering in other aspects.
According to Digital Foundry, understanding the power draw from the components that make the PlayStation 5 Pro is not a definitive jump that many would hope to believe. On the conversation of Grand Theft Auto VI, it is not likely to run at 60hz on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Even Sony itself addressed that the system is not a major shift from the base PlayStation 5 and should tame expectations from the hardware.
In a new interview with Digital Foundry, PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny its new Project Amethyst initiative with AMD is to deliver the “next evolution” for PSSR in 2026 when FSR4 is on the way. “Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR,” Cerny tells the publication.
“The neural network (and training recipe) in FSR 4’s upscaler are the first results of the Amethyst collaboration. And results are excellent, it’s a more advanced approach that can exceed the crispness of PSSR. I’m very proud of the work of the joint team!” Project Amethyst fundamentally is a push for better return in quality & performance with assistance from AI and is being promised results with the new arrangement with AMD.
“Our focus for 2025 is working with developers to integrate PSSR into their titles; in parallel, though, we have already started to implement the new neural network on PS5 Pro. Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR; it should take the same inputs and produce essentially the same outputs. Doing that implementation is rather ambitious and time consuming, which is why you haven’t already seen this new upscaler on PS5 Pro.”
